LipSync

LipSync is our largest annual fundraiser and is open to the entire MIT community. The event is mainly a talent competition where groups enter acts and can perform anything they choose (as long as part of their act involves lip syncing). Groups that perform range from fraternity and sorority pledge classes to the MIT Fencing Club to the MIT Emergency Medical Services to the MIT Ju Jitsu Team to MIT Dance Troupe. AXΩ sisters participate annually in a new member act and also in a chapter-wide act. The AXΩ Seniors provide the interludes and the Lip Sync Committee members inform the audience about our national philanthropy and about the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) at the conclusion of the show so that everyone can become more aware of domestic violence and about our pledge to stop it. In 2007, we had about 900 people in attendance and raised $5,214.01.

The 20th annual LipSync was held on Saturday, April 26, 2008. Thank you to all performers, judges, and members of the audience!

DVA Week

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, Alpha Chi hosts a DVA Week every fall. Sisters work at a booth in Lobby 10 all week and hand out flyers with information about domestic violence and rape. We also sell carnations at this booth for anyone to give to their friends/family. All carnations come with a card attached that has more information about our philanthropy and facts about domestic violence. We personally deliver the flowers at the end of the week. In 2007, we sold about 200 flowers to the MIT community. At booth for DVA Week, we also sold many t-shirts with the slogan “Love Shouldn’t Hurt.” From our booth sales, we raised a total of $832.66.

Kristin's Story

Also during that week, we hosted Kristin's Story, a mother's tale of her daughter's rape and subsequent suicide. After Kristin's Story, we lit luminaries on the steps of the Student Center and handed out informational flyers and talked with anyone who passed by. Many people said they were very moved by our display and thanked us for supporting such an important cause.

Clothesline Project

Also during DVA Week, we supported the Clothesline Project by having the t-shirts on display at both our booth throughout the week and at Kristin's Story and the luminaries afterwards. The Clothesline Project is "a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women." Many of the shirts on display told the stories of how women had been raped or abused and many people commented on their strong stories during DVA Week and were visibly moved by the messages they sent forth.

Fundraising

In addition to our strong presence on campus, we also raised money during the entire month of October through a fundraising website and by participating in a fundraiser with Uno’s Pizzeria in Boston. Through the website alone we raised $2,665. For the Uno’s fundraiser, Uno's donated 20% of all money made on a Friday night to our local philanthropy from anyone that brought in one of our vouchers. We estimate that 50-100 people went to Uno's with our voucher for our cause. Our total fundraising for DVA Week (not including the money raised from Uno's) was $3,497.66.

Fondue

Fondue is an annual classy open-house event hosted by Alpha Chi Omega to create and foster relationships between MIT students and faculty members. It is traditionally a three-hour event, with the first hour dedicated to faculty and administrators as well as their families, while the remaining portion of the event functions as a chance for AXO sisters to showcase the beautiful mansion to MIT students and other members of the MIT community.
This year, the faculty hour was also an opportunity for sisters to thank and honor the faculty and administrators who have endeavored to improve the quality of student life and academic development at MIT. This year's honored guests were Stephen Immerman (Senior Associate Dean for Student Development), Robert Randolph (Chaplain to the Institute), and Kaya Miller (Assistant Dean for FSILGs and Residence Life Programs). Throughout the entire three-hour event, the Swedish Jazz Spectrum, an MIT jazz band, performed for our guests. In addition, delicious chocolate-dipped desserts were served as students and faculty members mingle and engage in casual conversation.
